A Scout must use the EDGE model to teach a younger Scout a specified skill.?
My son will be going for his "LIFE" soon. This is a new requirement for his rank. What does "EDGE" mean? We tried to look it up and couldn't find anything?
Hi Kim, 
EDGE is the teaching model used in Scouting. It's an acronym that stands for:
• Explain - The trainer explains how something is done.
• Demonstrate - The trainer demonstrates while explaining again.
• Guide - The learner tries the skill while the trainer guides him through it.
• Enable - The learner works on his own under the eye of the trainer.
For example, if you wanted to teach someone to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you would:
• Explain - Tell what goes into a sandwich, show a picture of how the parts go together, and talk about the tools required (knife) and how to use them.
• Demonstrate - Show how to make one by doing it yourself, re-explaining each step as you do it.
• Guide - Have each person make a sandwich step by step with the help of the trainer.
• Enable - Sit back and watch the people make sandwiches, stepping in only when people forget what to do.
This is taught as part of Troop Leadership Training, which can be found in the Scoutmaster's Handbook. The SM Handbook recommends giving this training each time the troop elects new leaders. It is also taught as part of National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) which is a week long leadership course offered by your local council.
