How can I figure out what the "scale size" is for a model motorcycle I have?
***I guess I need to now how it is calculated.
Well, normally it's printed on the BOX... but here is how to calculate.
SCALE is a ratio X:Y or X/Y that is a unit of measure X on the model compared to the number of units of measure Y on the actual item. For example Tamiya makes 1//12 scale motorcycles. So one foot (or inch, or yard, or cm, or mm) of MODEL is equal to 12 on the real object.
Lets say your model is a BMW K1200GT, on the REAL motorcycle the front wheel rim is 17" in diameter... you measure the rim of your MODEL, and it's just shy of and inch and a half (1.416). Now you divide the REAL measure by the MODEL measure, and you get the number for the scale... in this case 12. SO the scale would be 1:12.
Ready for a practice problem... how tall would a 6 foot tall person be in 1:12 scale ?? (hint: convert 6 foot to inches)
