Why did my cars engine suddenly lose all power while traveling on the freeway?

While traveling approx 75-80 mph, my '99 Civics engine lost power, emitted black smoke from the exhaust, and came to a rolling stop. This occurred on the return trip from a meet approx 80 miles from home. The trip there was uneventful. I've checked the timing belt-still intact, and the Spark Plug wires-still good. The engine turns over but simply will not start. There is some patterned smoke when trying to start the engine. Any ideas?

black smoke means too much fuel. your injector(s) is (are) dumping fuel in for what ever reason. get to a shop.
