2004 Harley Davidson Custom 1200, I need advice for buying?
I am buying my first 2004 Harley Davidson Custom 1200 this weekend for $6,000. The bike has 4,600 miles on it. The bike has clean title and (1-owner) mid 40 year old male. What do I need to look out for? Any help would be much appreciated? Maintance, upgrades ect. Thanks Harley Riders!
The bike is about due for a 5000 mile service. Ask for the Owners Manual, if he doesn't have it, go to HD and get one....and READ IT!!!....a recent survey found that only 4% of HD owners actually read the manual. They never follow the proper maintenance schedule and wonder why when they finally DO take it in for service, it costs 3 times the amount it normally would if it had been properly maintained in the first place......take care of it and it will take care of you.
Minor services on the 2500 marks.
Regular full services on the 10k marks.
MAJOR FULL SERVICE on the 20k marks.
The services do not have to be done by HD, any aftermarket shop can do this. I recommend running synthetic MOTORCYCLE oil. I, and most people, tend to think HD's Syn3 oil is crap. #1 - Amsoil, #2 - Mobil 1, #3 - Lucas. It is fine to run the same 20/50 syn in the Primary/Trans as in the engine.......
Since it is due for this service, have it done now and have the shop THOROUGHLY look over the bike and inform you of anything else needed.....they SHOULD do this anyway, it's new to you, the service is due, now is the time to do it!!!
Ask how old the battery is and what brand battery!!! If it is more than 2 years old get a new one. Stick with HD for the battery!!!....these are THE most heavy duty, long lasting batteries on the market. Get a Battery Tender.... http://batterytender.com/?SID=4668b310602955d5e8debe51240eb9d3 ....they are available from any bike shop. Hook up the pigtail to the battery and keep it plugged in whenever not riding, it will always keep the battery fully charged and ready to go. Doing this, you will get 4-6 years from the battery. Better to pay $130 for one GOOD battery every 4-6 years than $75 every 1-2 years for a cheap battery. DO NOT use ANY type of charger on an HD battery other than a Battery Tender or similar type "float-charger"....old style trickle chargers will kill HD's AGM type batteries!!!
Check the tires for any dry-rotting and tread condition.....due to the age, not mileage.
With such low miles, this should really be about it.
