Is "Honesty" really the best policy?
Case in point: I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected the following items:
1) A half gallon of 2% milk,
2) A carton of eggs,
3) A quart of orange juice,
4) A head of romaine lettuce,
5) Two tomatoes,
6) A 5 lb. can of coffee.
As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a biker standing behind me watched as I placed them in front of the cashier.
While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the biker calmly stated, “You must be single.”
I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the derelict’s intuition, since I was indeed single. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my selections that could have tipped off the biker to my marital status.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I said: “Well, you know what, you are absolutely right. But how on earth did you know that?”
The biker said, "Cause you're ugly."
So, one more time: "Is honesty the best policy?"
Whether this is a legit question or not it's worth asking. Sometimes I wonder. For instance my boyfriend is always trying to be funny, joking around. Always coming up with some off-the-wall answer. See if you think these examples are polite:
1) Once he said, "Your teeth remind me of stars. They come out at night."
2) We went swimming and he said, "You swim so smooth so graceful. It's like that movie star."
I said Easter Williams? He said, "No, the Creature from the Black Lagoon." And he thought that was funny.
3) We had a disagreement about something and his sister took his side. He said he wished I was more like my sister. And I'm thinking... your sister is the town punch. There isn't one guy (and from I hear) a couple girls she hadn't been with.
There were others but you get the idea.
But I got him back. We were talking marriage and he said, "I hope you can cook like my mommy."
And I said, "As long as you bring home the bread like my daddy."
It didn't shut him up but gave him something to think about.
