What is the best Air Force base in the UK or Germany for Security Forces?
My husband recently joined the USAF and we want to get stationed in the UK or Germany. What is the best Air Force base for a Security Forces job and regarding housing for married couples too. I know a lot of bases have recently built new housing. Anyone have any suggestions? I know we won't be guaranteed anything but its worth a shot.
First, realize that SF are at every single AF base. As such... you could land anywhere. Also, he'll get a list of bases when he is in tech school that he will have to choose from. Those will be bases that are accepting 3 levels when at the time he is finishing his schooling. And those will be the only bases that he can choose from.
Now, that said....
All that is left in Germany is Spangdahlem and Ramstein. Ramstein is very big and very crowded and the area is like little America. Spang is closer to Luxembourg, and in a rural area. We absolutely loved our 5 1/2 years we spent there! It sits near the Mosel river valley, so lots of yummy white wines. and lots of great castles in the area. Also, Lux, Bel., and the Netherlands are all less than an hour away. (Paris is a mere 5 hours!)
UK... the 2 main bases are RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall. And there are 2 or 3 smaller ones, with a small US presence. But, not really any services. Housing in England is SMALL. On base or off base, it's just small compared to American standards. The housing for Lakenheath and Mildenhall are shared and run out of the same office. Lakenheath is renovating and building new, but it is a long wait list to get in. The avg. wait is about 18 months. We chose to live off base while we were there and loved living in our village! It was a great experience living with the locals and being able to walk into town to do everything. (My hair place was 1/4 mile, the local library 1 mile, and the weekly farmers market... 1/2 mile!)
Just be prepared to end up any where in the world. And realize that lots of folks want overseas as well. Whatever you do, make each base the BEST place you've ever lived!
